Why is it that Dentists never seem to want to talk or ask you questions until it`s near impossible to respond?

You enter the room where a dental nurse swiftly settles you into the `chair`. The dentist enters and before you can say Jo Bloggs he`s crammed just about every dental instrument he has at hand into your mouth. Then the real torture starts as you try garbling out replies to his never ending onslaught! I don`t know about the rest of the world but I really would like to explain any problems or wishes I have while I`m still capable.

Dentists are comedians, just like the waiters or waitresses who always seem to come to your table and ask you how the meal is when you have a mouth full of food.

I don't know, but mine does the same thing!
I think it goes with the territory.
it's a sick game they play..
lol that is so true and u can't even nod yes coz u have to keep the head still so you try a gargled muffled ahuh,
I think they are trying to keep your mind off what they are really doing to you.to keep you distracted and thinking about other things - like how you're gonna answer him without getting your tongue in the way of that sharp tool. I hate when they do that, but it works to keep my mind off it.
I'm so anxious that they have to reassure me to get anywhere near.
lol thats true happens to me and i just move my head like shut up and fix my teeth
I think they are having a laugh. It can't be nice in being in peoples mouths every day. A break in the stress of their day i think.
coz they are evil and sadistic beings, who do the devils work (as you can tell, I dont like dentists)
yeah sounds familiar.but they all seem like they are in such a hurry.i have noticed the same about doctors to though.they are always in a big hurry then write out a prescription. and you leave there with not much more knowlege than when you went there.i agree with you though ..i do not like it either.like running through cattle.instead of human beings..i think sometimes it is the health insurance you have but i am not sure on this point.
Because they really don't want to hear you complain or hear what you have to say! :)
You know - we have our own side of this story. We are all well aware of the joke about dentists asking questions when you can't answer, so we try a couple of things. First of all, I will say, "I know you can't talk, but just say, 'Uh-huh,' or, 'Un-uh'," and then ask a yes or no question. More often than not, I will think of something I want to ask and then I will WAIT until about five seconds before I am about to have all that junk out of the patient's mouth so they can talk when I am done asking my question. The problem IS, though, that by the time I wait that long, I FORGET WHAT I WAS GOING TO ASK!

Besides, dentists are pretty good at understanding you when you talk with your mouth full of our junk, so just try to answer anyway.
We find it entertaining; it's one of the perks that comes with the job ;) But in all honesty, we can usually understand what you're saying, even with all that stuff in there.
Its to fill in an awkward silence..
Hey, just be thankful when you wake up your pants arent unbuttoned.
Not all of us are like that. I spend a lot of time with my patients and they tell me how their family is doing, how the baby is, where they went for vacation, etc. I always disliked going to any doctors that didn't listen to me so I always try to. Maybe find another one that listens to you more if you are unhappy with that. There are plenty that are compassionate and will give you the attention you desire. Good luck! Maybe try a female dentist because they are typically a little more compasionate in my experience than some men. But it doesn't really matter what gender they are as long as you are comfortable with them. Take care!
I always ask the patient what's up before reclining them in the chair. I get all the information I need then. After that I don't really speak to the patient because I hate speaking to folk. Who wants to have thirty conversations about whether its raining or not!

Usually once the local is in and we're waiting for that to take effect I let my nurse do the small talk with the patient while I waste my time on line doing thgings like answering questions!
my dentist is just 2 chatty (mr east @ long eaton, nottingham)
