Why can't my Dentist get my gums numbed to do major cleaning work?
Answers:
I have the same problem and my wife is a dentist. Dentist use a method called a block. This means they find where the nerve comes out of the bone in the skull and with a needle put anesthetic around that site. The block for the lower jaw is done way in the back near your TMJ joint. If your nerve exits somewhere different than other people the dentist can put the anesthetic somewhere it doesn't do any good. You don't get numb. I once had 7 vials of anesthetic during a crown prep and never got numb (not by my wife!). VERY painful. I'm just a little out of the ordinary. Sounds like you are too.
How much do you weigh? Maybe they aren't using enough or you both have a VERY LOW threshold to pain.
Yeah thats pretty weird. Not saying you are weird though. Some people just have a lower pain threshold. Maybe before you go to the dentist next, you could try a take a couple of panadol. If this doesnt work, maybe he could give you another injection. I know from experience that I have had up to 5 injections at one time. Good luck, visiting the dentist at anytime is not a fun thing to do.
some people have an extra nerve supplying certain areas in their mouth which means the dentist has to put anaesthetic on this nerve also, this is genetic. Anaesthetic in the lower jaw can take 10 minutes to work.
Maybe in the future get the dentist to clean your teeth.
