Sudden Sharp Shooting Pain when Chewing Gum?

i was vigorously chewing gum this morning (as i often do) and all of a sudden, i had the most intense shooting pain in one of my bottom left molars. the pain is still kind of there although now it's dulled considerably. this happens to me once every 3-4 months but the pain has been getting worse every time. i have a filling in this tooth from over 10 years ago so maybe that has something to do with it? HELP! i don't know what to do. does this warrant seeing my dentist?

Answers:
YES YOU NEED TO SEE YOUR DENTIST, YOUR FILLING IS LEAKING AND NEEDS REPLACEMENT
get a root canal treatment done
See your dentist. It may not be that you need a root canal as the other person who answered you stated, although that is a possibility. A piece of your filling may have chipped or broken out or you may have a cavity forming around that filling. There are other things that could be causing your pain, so your best bet is to see your dentist, especially since this is a long standing problem for you.
