Dry socket questions?

I have a dry socket in my upper back part of my mouth. This is day 3 for a dressing change, and is not really getting much better. Will this dressing fall out? I go back tomorrow for another change. But can I eat, and drink without it falling out? What kind of food?

Answers:
I sympathize. I got dry socket in all three of the holes my wisdom teeth were in.

They have never fallen out on me.

Trying to eat and drink with that nasty taste was not very good, since I had that taste no matter what I ate.
Wisdom teeth don't you hate it!
Okay Dry socket packing isn't that moveable. If your going in tomarrow don't worry about. You can pretty much eat anything. No staws. Don't do rice. I got mine pulled 5 weeks ago and rice still gets stuck back there. Um other than that really just small hard stuff. Like nuts
Well good luck and sorry about your dry socket!
Eat something soft or soup, and don't worry about the packing. Dry sockets really hurt and take about a week to feel better. Don't suck anything through a straw or chew gum, smoke. Take some ibuprophen (with food). If the bottle says take one, take two. That would be the doctors prescription doseage and it won't hurt you. But it will reduce the swelling and inflammation not to mention the pain. Get an ice pack on it and get in the bed!! You need to rest! Godloveya.
Dry sockets are the worst!

since your going tomorrow I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just stick to soft foods, yogurt, ice cream, applesauce mashpotatoes etc. that's what I did.
Postextraction alveolitis (dry socket) is pain emanating from bare bone if the socket's clot lyses. Although assumed to be due to bacterial action, it is much more common in smokers and oral contraceptive users. It is peculiar to the removal of mandibular molars, usually wisdom teeth. Typically, the pain begins on the 2nd or 3rd postoperative day, is referred to the ear, and lasts from a few days to many weeks. Alveolitis is best treated with topical analgesics: a 1- to 2-in iodoform gauze strip saturated in eugenol or coated with an anesthetic ointment, such as lidocaineSome Trade Names
XYLOCAINE
Drug Information
2.5% or tetracaine 0.5%, is placed in the socket. The gauze is changed every 1 to 3 days until symptoms do not return if the gauze is left out for a few hours. This procedure eliminates the need for systemic analgesics.

________

PERSONAL NOTE: Whenever I have an extraction, I put the gauze in place and secure it while drinking plenty of fluids via a straw once the clot is set usually within 12 to 24 hours...the idea is to keep the mouth moist (gauze and all) to prevent dry socket.
I feel for you,They are the worst pain! It will take a whole week before the pain starts to go away. Try drinking through a straw and eating soft foods, soup. you don't want debris getting near the socket you have to keep things clean there.
