An abcess is basically an acute infection usually occuring on a tooth where the nerve has died and the nerve tissue has started to break down causing inflammation. It sometimes occurs on a tooth that has already had root canal treatment (nerve removed) but the treatment hasnt managed to remove all of the dead nerve effectively thus causing reinfection for indefinate periods of time. Antibiotics are the first course of treatment to try to clear this up but this is not a cure, it will only subside the problem for a time untill treatment is carried out, either by re-root canal treatment, or extraction. The prognosis for re-root canal treatment is low, but if your really keen to save the tooth, they may be able to explore this, or send you to a specialist. Either way ask for their advice and more information on why you need extraction. Good luck.
Personally I would get another opinion about removing the tooth. If the tooth is actually abcessed and the antibiotics don't help, then you MAY have to have it pulled,BUT I would take every step possible to save the tooth ,beginning with seeing my own dentisit. Good luck.
The reason you would need the tooth removed is because the tooth is unrestorable. Either you have a huge cavity that extends into the bone or a majority of the crown is missing. I don't think the dentist would lie to you about that. We would much rather do a root canal and a crown than extract teeth. If you are questioning his abilities, by all means get a second opinion. His feelings might get hurt, but it is your tooth. Oh yeah, antibiotics will not cure an abcess, you always will need to have the pulp removed, either by an extraction or root canal.
I can save you the time on trying to save the tooth. I just went through a reroot canal on a tooth last year. My dentist and Periodontist both sent me to an endodontist to save the tooth with a reroot canal. It was all due to having an infection in the tooth that wouldn't go away. That was April of last year. In November/December the tooth was abcessed. It would not show on x-ray at all. I opted to have it removed and replaced with implants. Good thing I did, because the infection would have been coming back.
An abscess is a symptom of a larger problem. When an infection is present in a tooth, an abscess can form.
Antibiotics treat the abscess, but not the problem causing the abscess. Once the infection is under control because the antibiotics have done their job, you need to go back to a dentist to treat the tooth that is causing the infection and abscess. The tooth may need a filling, root canal, crown or extraction depending on the degree of decay.
Th reasons things have settled down is because the antibiotics have done their job, but the abscess WILL return if the tooth is not treated. So go see a dentist to evaluate the problem. Good luck!
I had an abscess last week and it was the worst experiance of my life i would have rather given birth for three days than go through that pain, i had the antibics for 5 days and then went back on weds for my tooth to be removed but they didn't in the end i was so thankfull this wasn't my normal dentist either but i have made an appointment to see my normal one just to get things checked over
