Why are dentists allowed to blackmail the public?

I thought blackmail was illegal.
What do you call it when you are told you WILL see us every six months and pay our ridiculous fees or we will remove you from our lists? particularly when it is almost impossible to find an NHS dentist.

Answers:
tell them that if they don't change their fees and attitude they are going to lose other customers too. then walk out and don't go back
I try and make my appointment every 10 months. There is a limit to the time between appointments when a person is then taken off the patient list but you can leave it longer than 6 months. This is what my daughter in law tells me and she works for a dentist.
It's usually called a checkup and isn't that expensive if you look after your teeth.

What about council tax, I don't get anything from it, I still have to pay it or I get thrown into prison now thats blackmail.
I agree with you. The cheek of it, they know their are too few dentists around UK. HUH, try and change your dentist. Good luck :))
I would try very hard to find another dentist. You are the PAYING customer & they work for YOU.
First of all that is not blackmail, that is their rules. The Dentist who has spent several years in schooling to get where they are can make their own rules. I work for a dentist and she does not do this but I can see why some would. It is aggravating when we have patients that do not come when they should, but when something happens like a broken tooth, toothache, they want in right now and they sometimes blame the dentist for their problems. So I do not agree with dismissing your patients but it is very important to get cleanings every 6 months and have any other necessary treatment. Some people do not understand the health risk of not taking care of your teeth. If someone has decay & infection from a tooth it can be very serious. I believe there have been 3 children die in the last year (from my state) from seriously decayed teeth because their parents where too lazy or thought is was too expensive to take them to the dentist. Also if someone has children that are not taken to the dentist and do have several needs this is considered neglect and should be reported. So please take care of your teeth!!
Hmmm I think maybe that blackmail is a bit strong, but I totally agree with your sentiment.

At the end of the day it is a choice we make...
to go to the dentist or not..

My fear of them kept me away for over 10 years, and only went for treatment when one of my teeth broke. My old dentist had thrown me off their list without telling me. It was impossible to find an NHS dentist that was accepting new patients, so I had no choice but to go private.

They recommend that I go for check-ups everything 6 months, but I don't, as long as I make sure I go after about 18 months I can cut down how many times I go, the cost, but still ensure that I am a registered patient.

Whilst they would prefer me to go more often, they do not seem to have any problem with the way I use their service.

Knowing the problems I had getting treatment, and how much it cost me to have all the initial consultation and x-rays etc, I do keep to the 18 months schedule. It's cheaper in the long run and much less hassle.

I'm also a member of 'Westfield' contributory health scheme

and find that this is more cost effective for me as I wear glasses as well. So I view it as getting my dental care for almost free!
Is it possible that it was just the way "this person" put it to you? Some people shouldn't work with the public, I've seen my fair share of them.

It "is" in your best interest that you see your dentist every six months for your semi-annual cleaning with x rays once a year and a pano every five years. It just helps us to catch problems when they are small before they become full blown problems that require "extensive and expensive" work to be done. The bigger the problem, the more it cost! We have quite a few patients who come only once a year, but that is with our agreement that if anything comes up they will call immediately. Then we have others who only come in when they have a major problem.did I mention expensive with the major? What amazes me is they don't have money for prevenative care or cleanings, but most all can find the money for "one single killer toothache" that needs a root canal with a post and core build up and a crown. The cost of which would have paid for several years of cleanings. We know it's a hassle but it is important, for you.

If you would feel better about going once every 8 or 9 months, talk to the dentist about it and see if he thinks it will be advisable with your dental health and oral hygiene. If you get the same demanding response, start looking for a new dentist while you keep up with your appointments with this one. Good luck and I wish I had a perfect solution for you.
go to mexico instead
If you dislike the fees of your dentist make a complaint. Or switch dentists to one that you will stop moaning about. It's not blackmail, they're just doing they're jobs.
6 monthly checks are a thing of the past, the goverment decided last year that you should visit the dentist once a year.
It's not the actual dentist who decides these rules and regulations, it's the goverment and the local Primary care trust.
The reason most dentists are going private is because the pct/goverment are expecting them to see more patients a day and pay them less, call me an old sour puss but would you flog your guts 5/6 days a week for less cash? i know i wouldn't
