Novacaine.how long will the effects last?

What can I do to speed up the process of the medicine wearing off? My mouth is numb!

Answers:
It will depend on the anesthetic used and how much was administered. Novacaine is no longer used, but you may have had lidocaine or carbocaine or one of many others. Some are short acting, while others are long acting ones used for surgical procedures which allows the patient time to get home take a pain medication and have the effects of it start to work before the anesthetic wears off. So it really depends on the procedure that was done. They usually don't last but a few hours for a simple filling or some other small procedure where as with surgery or some other major work the patient may be numb for three or four hours or longer. There really isn't anything that you can do, some say cold works and others say heat.I say just give it time and be careful not to bite your tongue, cheek or lip. Good luck and hope I've been of some help.
Usually it'll last no longer than a few hours. It all depends on how much you received.

Don't rush the process of the numbing agent from wearing off; let it work how it's supposed to!
3 - 4 hours. Call your doc if it lasts longer.
One way to help get rid of the numbness after a dental visit is to soak the area with hot water. Stand in the shower and let the water, as hot as you can bear it, beat onto your face. You can also take a hot rag and press it against your face on the numb area. The hot water treatment helps the novacaine numbness to go away rather quickly.
I'm a dental nurse and we usually advise to be car full until the numbing dies off which is usually within the next 5hours...i had a tooth out tho and it took 8 hours for my numbness to wear off so dnt b alarmed if it does take longer then what u are reading

I don't mean to scare you, but depending on how close to the nerve the shot was given, there have been reported cases of people never regaining full feeling in the area of the injection. In fact when I went to the dentist a couple of weeks ago, he warned me that because of the location and extreme condition of my tooth, that there would be a risk associated with the novacaine. He said that even though it's highly unlikely, he still has to warn patients to cover his own butt!
Once again, i'm not trying to frighten you, this is a very rare occurence, but it can happen. Ordinarily, the numbing effect will only last a couple 2-3 hours after you leave the dentist. If you recieved more than one injection, or a higher dosage of novacaine than normal, of course this time will vary a little. The best thing you can do is wait it out. If it's numb, it's probably because it's supposed to be. If you still haven't regained feeling within say 6-8 hours after leaving the dentist, then it's time to start getting worried!
If you go exercise like run or jog, you get your adrenalin pumping and your body will eat up the anesthetic faster. 30yr
