For Dental Hygenists: If someone had SRP done on all quadrants, how soon should they be probed again to check

the status of the pockets? My dentist said after 4 weeks-that seems soon to me. Wouldn't waiting a bit longer give a better result? What is your opinion?

Answers:
I'd say 6 weeks. That is the amount of time it takes collagen to fully form and reattach the pocket. Before the collagen is formed, the perio probe will pass through the weakly attached tissue. After that 6 weeks, the perio probing can be accomplished with accurate results. Of course that number isn't set in stone so 4-6 weeks is probably a pretty safe range. I just wouldn't cut it any shorter than 4.
It takes 3 months for the disturbed bacterial colonies to reestablish themselves. That's why perio maintenance appts are at 3 month intervals.

4-6 weeks is the general protocol.
