Help with tmj?
Answers:
Everyone has a TMJ or Temporo Mandibular Joint. The disorder is called TMD or Temporo Mandibular Disorder. Doctors who treat this disorder are called Prosthodontists, but not all Prosthodontists treat TMDs. It is a superspecialization that requires an additional year or two of education beyond the Prosthodontics residency program. A general dentist treating TMD is like a family physician putting a stent in your heart.
How you can help it depends on what your problem is. Do your jaw muscles hurt every morning when you wake up, or does your jaw click when you open your mouth wide or do you get lock jaw - if so, how often. Some jaw joint problems can be corrected with exercise, some with a splint (nightguard), and some with medications. Some are psychiatry associated and thus may need a different approach altogether.
If you do not have TMD and wish to prevent it, see a denitst (any dentist) twice a year for regular check ups. He/She will tell you if your teeth are wearing too fast or becoming mobile (loose).
Hope this helps. If you know what your problem is write it in a separate question, I'll try to answer it.
eating apples before you go to bed is normal solution! If your grinding your teeth at night.
Many people, more women than men, have TMJ. However, the full TMJ disorder develops in only a few. Most of the symptoms disappear in 2 weeks because your jaw joint rests and recovers when you are unable to chew.
* Anti-inflammatory pain medications such as aspirin or acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Aleve) may ease the pain of TMJ.
* Eat a diet of soft foods.
* Apply warm compresses on the area of pain. Home therapy includes mandible (lower jaw) movements, such as opening and closing the jaw from side to side. Try this after a warm compress is applied for 20 minutes. The lower jaw movements should be repeated 3-5 times a day, 5 minutes continuously each time, for about 2-4 weeks.
Try some analgesics and then consult with your doctor or dentist.

TMJ can be helped by proper alignment of the bite and your teeth. If you have an overbite, crooked teeth, or a crossbite, that could be a contributing factor.
I have a splint. it's clear, and fits over my top teeth and is flat on the bottom so I can't close my mouth all the way. It really helps with the pain. I only have to wear it at night, because I clench my teeth together real hard. I can wear it during the day but usually don't because it makes you talk a little funny.
