ok, i know this sounds REALLY stupid but what IS a cavity?

i'm in charge of my two twin brothers now since my parents died a few months ago and apparently one of them has and upcoming dentist appointment and i heard they come from eating too much sugar. he eats a lot of sugar. if he does have a cavity, will i have to pay gobs of money to have it removed, whatever the hell a cavity is?

PLEASe no rude comments on the dumb blonde who doesn't know what a cavity is.

Not bad answers, well a few anyways. But here is the dental description of a cavity. There is bacteria in your mouth. They feed on sugars. Sugar can come from many sources: candy, sodas, cookies, juice, ice cream, etc. When the sugar is left on the teeth for a period of time (varies by person) the bacteria eat these sugars. Bacteria does the same things that any living organism does: eats and poops. The acidic by product that they release eats away the enamel, softening the tooth structure and therefore causing a cavity. Contrary to another answer I read, a cavity is not what the dentist puts in the tooth, that is a filling. To get rid of the cavity, the dentist does drill the decay(cavity) out of the tooth. He then fills that "hole" with a filling material that is either metallic or tooth colored.

Hope that helps!

Its a made up word to get you to spend gobs of money.
The dentist drills and fills a hole in the tooth. Not super expensive.
It's a hole in a tooth, usually a molar.

They drill them out, then fill them with either metal or porcelain.
A cavity is where your tooth rots, I'm not quite sure how much it costs, it depends on your insurance coverage, you may want to ask there dentist if they can put sealants on there teeth, that helps protect them from getting new cavity's.
a cavity is tooth rot and if it needs to be fixed it can cost lots of money of you dont have insurance
hole in your tooth.

and sorry about your parents
A cavity is a hole in the tooth where it has decayed.
Yes sugar can do it but not brushing is the biggest culprit.
Make them brush every morning before school and just before they go to bed. A cavity is not removed. It is filled after the decayed part has been removed. The dentist will give him a shot to numb the area so it wont hurt. The shot looks bad but it really doesnt hurt that much. Check with your health department. Some of them have a dental clinic. m
A cavity is a hole in your tooth from rotting. Just make sure they brush their teeth 2-3 times a day. The signs are pain or a black speck/hole in the tooth. The dentist will have to, literally, drill the tooth, and fill it back up. I've never had a cavity, so I do not know how much it costs. But I advise, to brush daily, and floss once in awhile to prevent cavities, because of pain/hassle/costs.
