You may have a condition called TMJ. It is the joint where the mandible (the lower jaw) joins the temporal bone of the skull. You have common symptoms of this. Other symptoms could include ear pain,Frequent head/neck aches and temple pain. Its a good idea that you made an appointment with your doctor. But for the next few days Rest the muscles and joints by eating soft foods. Do not chew gum. Avoid clenching.
Relax muscles with moist heat(heating pad or warm cloth)

Jaw popping means that the disc inside the jaw joint is unstable. The disc pops when it spits forward out of place or backwards into place. This is caused by an abnormally shaped disc and can be so loud that it disturbs other people. You could say that it's a floppy disk.
I have no clue,I have had the same problem for 8 years, and my dentist said I was fine.
