How bad/dangerous is it to drink soda while wearing braces?
I had braces put on my teeth this afternoon and during all of the do this/don't do that lecture they warned me not to drink any carbonated beverages at all. The problem is I'm addicted to caffeine (I don't drink coffee) and I need my Pepsi! What happens when you continue to drink soda while wearing braces? Does it really leave behind stains or ruin the cement? Is it okay to drink a little soda with a straw and then brush immediately after?
Answers:
Here is the deal with Soda and braces. All the sodas have an acid called Phosphoric acid. They tend to melt the cement and if you don't maintain perfect oral hygiene, they will cause white marks on your teeth. In addition to the acid, all the sodas have sugars. Acid and sugar are lethal combination for your teeth. So once you are done with treatment, you will have straight but rotten teeth. Drinks like 7 up and Hansen's soda do not have these acids.
Stir the Pepsi to get the bubbles out first.
Two words..rotten teeth. Enjoy.
my orthadontist never said anything about not drinking soda. It may be that it rusts becasue people say if you pour soda on metal it will take the paint off the car and rust. I drink it all the time with braces and i am fine.
Ok, so they told me the same thing but I wasn't addicted to soda. Really, they are trying to prevent you from staining your teeth cuz it looks really funny when you get your braces off. I think if you lessen the amount you drink and always brush after, you will be fine. i am and i got no stains to prove it. brush brush brush!!
Regular Soda errodes because of the Carbonation and high sugar content which = cavities where it deposits (which is all around your braces.) Yuck! Chocholate is high in caffeine, try that!
