Do only people with severe underbites need surgery?

I have an underbite and it isn't that bad. But lately my jaw has been cracking and popping and its sort of starting to hurt. IfI were to go to the dentist would they just give me braces for it. I don't know if I want surgery.

Depends on your age.

If you are in your teens you are still growing and the braces they'll put on you will retard the rate of growth of the lower jaw.

If you are in your 20s or above, you may need surgery at some point - go to the dentist and find out.

NOTE: Over- and under-bites with improper alignment (as they all have) eventually causes sarthritis in the jaw joints.
