The pain..?
Help me. NEVER have I experienced the pain I am now, after having my wisdom teeth removed... Is this normal? I had 2 wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday. (partially impacted lower ones) The other side is fine.just like a normal dental pain. However, I have a HUGE swollen ball on my right lower cheek, bruising along my jaw line, and SO MUCH PAIN! I hurt SO, SO bad. I am taking Vicodin, Ibuprophen, inhaled pot fumes, through my nose, as to not contaminate the incision, all in an effort to feel better. Is it because I'm old? (37) Can someone please tell me what could be going on? What is the swelling from, specifically?
Perhaps understanding what is going on will help me deal with the pain.
Called dentist who performed the surgery and he prescribed an antibiotic, to be on the safe side. I have no fever, no foul odor, no bleeding, or any drainage that's noticable. What is happening?

Well, there is a pocket created from when the tooth was pulled. Could be filled with blood, creating pressure against the nerves, and causing you extra pain. Veins can be tricky like that sometimes. Lay down and place your legs into the air. This will cause your blood to stay in the torso. If this increases the pain (i.e. throbbing in the area) then you may have a small bleeding vein.
Try cold compresses against it as often and as long as you can tolerate it. That will help to diminish the swelling and slow dawn any blood that might be in the process of being forced into the area.
dental pain is the worst. an important thing my pharmacist told me is once you have a handle on the pain, its important to keep taking the ibuprofen for several days. this is also an anti-inflammatory to help with the swelling. so take your motrin just like the directions say, and take the vicodin for break through pain.
It is very likely that you have a dry socket. If this problem is still there by Monday you need to go to the dentist. This problem is not treatable at home. However it could just be infection in the area, and that is why the dentist gave you antibiotics.
Could be a big freakin' abscess. Take the antibiotics. If it isn't better in 2 days, go to the ER or back to your dentist.
The good news is time is on your side. It will get better. I found some good information on Dr Silegy's website pertaining to after wisdom tooth removal and care. See below.
In addition for those in need of dental care who do not have dental insurance, the AmeriPlan USA discount dental plan can help. AmeriPlan members receive an instant discount everytime they they see the Dentist. More info below.
Very sorry to hear of your dilemma.
A friend had the same thing. Impacted wisoms usually require surgery and that means cutting into the tissue to remove the problem.
That is most likely the cause of the swelling. When badly injured the body will flood the area with excess moisture to provide a cushion and protect the area. When the tenderness will permit, use hot packs to improve circulation but only if that does not increase the pain.
Call dentist again on monday to report condition.
With swelling on the lower jaw be alert to problems with swallowing. If it becomes very difficult call doctor or "ask a nurse" right away and discuss with them.
I don't know. We can't see you. so we can only make some educated guesses.
The timing would be right for a dry socket, but you said that there is no foul odor. You might expect to have a fever or drainage with an infection. A hematoma (bleeding inside the tissues) would give you a ball-like swelling, but not usually with such extreme pain. That's still my bet, though, because it would be the next most common thing and you did say you had bruising. If it is still getting larger, I'd suggest you consider seeing the surgeon or someone who he designates to see you in an emergency room.
Paul's suggestion about raising your legs would be helpful in diagnosis of continued bleeding that might be causing a hematoma.
NO more pot fumes or any kind of smoking.>>>Smoke, any kind, is a cause for dry socket. Also.the dentist more than likely fractured your jaw. If he didn't, then I know that it's dry socket.and that can hurt worse than anything. Good luck!
