Dental-what is a composite inlay or onlay?

My dentisit did this to my broken root canal tooth today-she said it is permanent-but it doesnt look permanent to me!
Will it last-worried as I fly off on holiday next week-have had 4 temporary fillings before that on the tooth and they all broke off-but she says this won`t?
Can anyone help with advice please?

Composite is the tooth colored filling material that dentists use. And inlay is when a tooth is prepared and a custom piece of either porcelain or composite is made for that place. An onlay is similar, it just covers more of the tooth.

Normally an onlay or inlay is repared by a laboratory. A dentist prepares the tooth, takes an impression and places a temp, then sends the impression to a lab to make the actual piece that fits in the preparation. Unless the dentist had a Cerac machine, if she did it right there in the office and didn't take an impression to send to a lab, I don't see how she is calling it an onlay/inlay. If she did the rootcanal and then filled the hole with filling material, that is called a buildup or simply a filling.

You didn't say if this was a molar, but if so, you should really be aware that molar teeth carry the most force in the mouth. Rootcanals cause a tooth to become brittle over time, and it is really in your best interest to do a full coverage crown, or you may find that this tooth does the same as the other teeth you mentioned breaking off. I dont care if she says it wont, because that is not true if it is one of the molars. I have seen it happen time and time again. You may as well protect your investment.

Good luck.
a composite inlay is a white filling, that can dry in air but is often dried using white light, it is often used in teeth at the front or near the front of the mouth
I can't see your tooth or inlay, but I can say that I am not a big fan of the composite inlay... You would be better off with a crown on a root canal tooth. Don't worry about it for your trip, though. It is ten times stronger than any temporary filling you have had.
Hi. An inlay or onlay is stronger than a normal filling , it's almost like a crown and is not build up like a filling in the surgery but is made from solid material...it should last you!
It is like little mermaid said, the diferene is that inay covers just one surface of the toth, onlay - more than one.
