Is there any way to protect my teeth/mouth from damage from tongue ring?

My daughter got her tongue peirced when she was 18, against my wishes. I told her it would damager her teeth and gums. But of course she didnt listen because what the hell do I know??? Anyway, her enamel is chipping and her gums are receding because of it. She only wore it for about a year and that is the damage it did. Her dentist can repair it but it is going to cost thousands of dollars. Without sounding preachy I would highly advise you to get rid of it. I know its cute but its not worth the damage it does.
