Digital dental xray machine safety?

How does a digital dental xray machine control the exposure level? Does the computer software control it? Can the dentist change the xray exposure level? What are the safety features used if the computer hardware or software fail?

Answers:
Yes the user changes the exposure time or the newer machines adjust themselves after the user inputs certain information about the patient, be it a child or adult. Different areas of the mouth need different exposure time some machine will adjust on there own when you do a FMX (full mouth x-ray) once the initial types of x-rays are set.

Xrays are taken exactly the same way with digital as they are with film, except the setting (controled with a dial connected to the exposing x-ray head) is set lower for the digital sensor.

The computer software only captures and displays the resulting image. The only safety feature required by the software is a meticulous backup system to make sure images are not lost.
Digital xrays are safe, the exposure can be changed. you would get more radiation exposure walking from your car to the grocery store than you would from dental xrays. The benefits definitely outweigh the risk. Most dental offices have a daily backup system for everything saved into the computer in the office.
just took a test on it today, and you get 85% less radiation from a digital xray than a regular dental xray with film.
