Hi. I was wondering what exactly is getting one's teeth capped?
Answers:
when a patient needs a crown ..
the dentist numbs the tooth and then shapes the tooth so a crown can be made to fit over it.
after the dentist prepares the tooth , he will get an impression which is kind of a putty like material placed in a small tray over the tooth..this takes about 3 minutes and is very easy to do. then that impression will be sent to the lab so the lab can make the ctown just for your tooth.
after the impression is done- the dentist or assistant will make a temporary crown to go on the tooth to protect it while waiting for the lab to make the crown- usually takes between one and 3 weeks.
you will need a 2nd appt at which time, the temporay crown will be removed and the permanent one tried on , adjusted and then permantely cemented. at this appt. typically, you do not need to be numbed.
The dentist grinds your teeth down and puts porcelain or gold caps on for cosmetic reasons or to repair a tooth.
It is like someone making an exact replica of your tooth , usually out of porcelain, then hollowing it out and setting it over your tooth, violla!
