does anyone know the difference between a regular crown and a resin crown?

my insurance will cover a resin crown for my 14 year old, but not a regular crown until he is 16 years old. what is the difference?

Answers:
The resin crown is made of plastic or composite material. It's a temporary fix for a broken front tooth used in this case due to the age of your son.
His face is still growing and changing. If you do a permanent crown now, the margin of the crown will look great today. (that's the line where the crown ends and the real tooth begins) It will be hidden under his gums. As his face grows, the teeth will continue to erupt and get longer. At age 16 the longer tooth will show that dark line. He'll have a pretty white tooth up to a point about 1-2 mm above the gums. There the margin of the crown will show. In order to make it look good, he'll have to get the crown redone in the future to drop the margin below the gums again.
Between ages 16 and 18, his face will stop growing and the teeth won't erupt anymore. At that point the dentist can place a crown with a hidden margin under the gums and it will stay there.

Clear as mud?

There are several different kinds of materials you can use for a crown. A resin crown will be made of the tooth colored filling material (also known as composite). A 'regular' crown can be made of gold, porcelain, or a combination of metal and porcelain. Your insurance will probably cover a resin crown because it is cheaper than any of the other options. I would recommend a 'regular' crown if you can afford it.
