Why does my breath smell when I'm hungry?

I've noticed that if I skip lunch or something, my mouth gets this really weird taste and I smell really bad. The smell won't go away until I eat something. After I eat something, then THAT smell stays in my mouth, so I have to chew gum or brush or something to eliminate the smell. However, if I do either before eating something (gum or brushing, that is), the smell comes back in a few minutes. I don't understand how this happens, for most people its the other way around, when they eat they smell but when they dont eat they dont smell. I can't find any info online about this, someone please help!

Halitosis (bad breath) when you're hungry due to skipping meals or dieting is actually pretty common. There are two theories as to why this happens. Both theories relate the causes of "hunger odor" to the causes of its better-known cousin "morning breath."

The first theory claims that hunger-induced halitosis is due to lack of saliva production. Saliva helps to irrigate the mouth and wash away plaque and odor-causing bacteria to a certain extent. The act of chewing while eating stimulates saliva production. If you're also failing to drink enough water in addition to skipping meals, dehydration will only make the situation worse.

The second theory has to do with the inner workings of your intestinal tract. Your pancreas produces a multitude of enzymes commonly referred to as "pancreatic juices," which aid in digestion in various ways. Although the production of pancreatic juices are accelerated by the process of consuming certain types of foods, your pancreas is always producing some of this substance. When your stomach and small intestine are empty (as in a fasting state), these juices can decompose and release an unpleasant odor.

Although hunger-induced bad breath is not unusual, skipping meals is unhealthy for a variety of reasons. If you must skip meals occasionally, at least make sure you're drinking lots of water.
