Underbite Surgery Questions. Please help.?

I went to my orthodontist yesterday to check if I would be able to get braces or not. As it turns out, my underbite is severe (according to the doctor) he recommended that I get braces at 17 and after a year I get surgery to fix the underbite, then back to braces again for another year. The operation would be 3hrs and I will have to stay in the care of the surgeon for about a week. So after all that, I would stop wearing braces around the age of 19. Which is a total of 3 1/2 years or so. I'm just wondering if the surgery would leave a scar? Or would make my speech sound irregular, like, if i could talk regular after it? If you can answer all that and add more concerns I might have, please do. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

I had braces & surgery when I was 17 for a severe open bite and small upper palate. I went into braces 1st, had the braces on through surgery and for awhile afterward. Mine did not leave any scarring at all. All surgery was internal. I was uncomfortable for about a month or so afterward (swelling &pain) and had a liquid diet. (My mom made me lots of homemade milkshakes with malt, ice cream, milk and probably ovaltine or something with vitamins. (she was concerned about me losing too much weight not being able to eat) She also had some kind of huge syringe and she used to make mashed potatoes mix it with the juice off pot roast and stuff and fed that to me.) I don't remember the total time I spent in the hospital (this was about 13-14 yrs ago) but it was a few days. Day or two in intensive care and then a few days in a regular hospital room. My surgery fixed my speech (I had a lisp.I said "yeth" instead of "yes"), the way I was able to eat (I was able to bite with my front teeth instead of just my back), and my self esteem. Take before and after pictures. You will be amazed at the difference. Be aware though, your bite may have a tendency to revert back after your surgery and it is a possibility to discuss with your surgeon. (They didn't think mine would but it did and even now, dentists are surprised. BUT I had my surgery done in the 90's and from what I understand things have come a long way.) I went to another orthodontist recently to get new retainers and they tried to talk me into more surgery to fix my slight open bite. I declined because, even with my regression, I am still happy I had the surgery, but once was enough. My regression isn't too bad. I still have a slight open bite, but it isn't nearly as noticeable, and my teeth are straight because they have room. Make sure you wear your retainers after your surgery and after your braces are removed. Good luck!

my husband has a pretty bad under bite, but refused the surgery, I'm not sure, but he mentioned them cutting your jaw and reconnecting it..again I'm not really sure how that is.he chose just to live with it..i would imagine there would be a slight scar if any..and your speech once you healed would be normal..there are risks with all surgery, you personally need to decide if this is one you wish to take? an under bite wont necessarily cause you any harm.
