Purple was right. Cleaning below the gumline will remove any bacterial debris from the root surfaces of the teeth. If debris, usually in the form of tartar or calculus is left is can lead to bone loss and eventually you could lose your teeth. It may be a bit uncomfortable but definitely worth it. You will be fine. I would go ahead and start rinsing daily with Listerine to help prepare your gum tissues.
Quad means they will be doing 1/4 of the mouth. Root planing is when they clean below the gum line. They'll numb your mouth and the hygenist will clean below the gum line. I've had my whole mouth done and depending on the hygenist it can be painless or a little tender after.
root planning is cleaning below the gum surface, done on patients that have perio disease. It is done per quadarant, usually right upper and lower together, then left upper and lower together. You are given an injection to numb the areas first.
