why does mouthwash have alcohol?

In those new ones, doesn't it not burn your mouth because they left out the alcohol? If so, then why did they put it in the first place? I don't know, I'm probably mistaken...

Answers:
Alcohol kills germs. That is why they included it in mouthwash in the first place. They no longer use it because people don't like the burning sensation and we now have other ingredients that will kill germs just as well.

To kill germs and bacteria that cause bad breath?
alcohol was used to kill the bad breath and germs now its called antibacterial and it does the same thing without the burn
To kill Germs and bacteria in your mouth.
so when an alcoholic can't get his hands on any booze he or she can still get his/her fix with mouth wash..
I'm not really sure why it is in the mouthwash, however I know it is bad. I work in the dental field and we do not recommend alcohol based rinses as they can cause drying of the tissue and lead to oral cancer and other problems.
Mouthwash contains alcohol, because it has been shown to have disinfecting properties, which the manufacturers believe is the solution to stop bad breath. My guess is that the manufacturers have figured out a way to create a mouthwash that doesn't burn by changing one of the main ingredients from alcohol to something else, or maybe they lessened the amount of alcohol they put into the product. There is also natural mouthwash, which is alcohol free.
