What's the truth about Root Canal?

I am having a root canal on my front top tooth. I have done a lot of research and spoken to a lot of people about it and I get a lot of conflicting answers. What's the truth about root canal? Does it hurt and is it as bad as what some people say?

Answers:
You will be absolutely fine. The dentist will remove all the decay in the tooth. He will then remove the nerve tissue from the tooth and clean and shape the canals. It's kind of like removing the wick from a candle. After the tooth is cleaned out he will fill the tooth with a rubber type material called gutta percha. He will place a temporary filling in the tooth untill you can get a permament filling or crown on the tooth.

It's really not any different from getting a filling.Once you get past the novacaine you really will be fine.I work for a endodontist and all we do is root canals. Most patients are pleasantly surprised how easy they are.Take two advil before the novacaine wears off and you really shouldn't need anything more.

All the horror stories you hear about root canals are really not true at all. The people who tell the horror stories are the ones that waited untill they were in major pain and the tooth really blew up on them.

Good luck,I'm sure you will be fine.
the truth?
what do you mean the truth
IF you dont agree with your Dentist, get a 2nd opinion
When I had one the tooth didn't hurt. What hurt was keeping my mouth open for the procedure. My jaw was hurting for a couple days after. I think it all depends on who does the root canal.
I had one 6 years ago on my lower side tooth. The procedure did not hurt any worse than a cavity drilling. My tooth since then chipped, broke and eventually the root canal fell out and now I have a hole there.
Good Luck.
No dental treatment should hurt more than a little if done properly.

In almost all cases, local anesthetic will be used, which will take away the pain, although you will be in some discomfort, as it takes a while and it's awkward holding your mouth open.

The fact that it's a front tooth should make it easier, as your dentist will have more room to work.
Both my front top teeth have been done, the procedure is not painful, just long. Your gums will be frozen just the same way as having a filling put in. But due to the length of time it takes, drilling down the tooth, burning out the root and then tiding it up and pulling on the temporary cap, a second round of freezing is often required. You jaw might ache a bit for a day or 2 after but that's just from holding it open for so long. Completely normal and nothing to worry about.
I've had four root canals--three the "old fashioned way" and one last month. The old way, with the big syringe full of Novacaine, the drilling and digging out the root was AWFUL. The one that I had last month did NOT hurt at all-- and I am such a chicken about going to the dentist that he had to give me a tranquilizer before the root canal. With the new method, the dentist used computerized equipment to inject the Novacaiune (did not hurt at all), computerized drilling and imagery to "dig out" the root and put in the subsequent filling. My most recent root canal was also in a front tooth. Dental work on front teeth is supposed to hurt more than work on teeth further back in your mouth. But mine did not hurt me at all.

Find out from the dentist if s/he has computerized equipment to do the root canal. If not, find a dentist that does. It may cost a little more, but the decreased pain is definitely worth it!
truth is:
1. The tooth gets brittle because the nerve that sustained its
health is no longer there. In root canals the quacks drill out
the nerve so you cant feel any more pain. Its nothing but
a "pay us" route to supposedly save a tooth.
2. Sometimes during the procedure the whole tooth cracks
and the procedure cant go on. The quack will then tell
you (without revealing to you what happened) that he has
completed the first part of the procedure and you have
to come back in a month or two to finish it. When you get
back he will have some other dentist there to go on and
tell you "Oh my, the tooth is cracked" and ask you when
you felt pain. Whatever you say, he will then contend that
your eating something at that time cracked the tooth and the dentist that started the root canal procedure had nothing to do with it. They both might demand you pay the bill for the incompetence, fraud and lying. DONT PAY IT.
Sue the bastards. But if you go into the first step and then they tell you to come back in a month or two, see another dentist immediately and get the truth.DONT TELL THAT DENTIST WHO THE DENTIST WAS THAT BROKE THE TOOTH or the two of them will conspire jointly to rip you off and conceal their fault.
Guide yourself accordingly
depends which tooth is being done.front and top teeth are easier, because the dentist can reach them better.with novocaine, these teeth wont be bad at all.the novocaine needle is all u will feel.but back molars can be hard, and root canal on them can be painful-the novocaine wears off after awhile-because they take so long to do,it means extra novocaine and extra time.i know.i had a top front tooth done, and it was a breeze.years later,i had a back, bottom tooth done-it was like in the very back, the very last tooth-it took 4ever,it hurt, and the dentist got so frustrated,he actually yelled a curseword, because it was so difficult to reach the nerve.good luck,as long as its not a back tooth,u will be pretty much ok.if the whole idea bothers u,u can be put under anasthesia and sleep thru it.the whole thing is not fair-i have been a fanatic brusher/flosser for life, how i ended up needing root canal is beyond me! ps-sounds like the last answerer really got burned, but dont worry.it really does save the tooth, preventing need for a bridge or implant.i had one of my root canals over 20 years ago ,and the tooth is still there and hasnt given me any trouble at all.after root canal, they crown or cap the damaged tooth to make it look like all ur other teeth, and to protect it.fact is,some peoples teeth will break, usually due to the aging process.ask anyone of a certain age if they fear popcorn-my mom broke her tooth on it.her dentist said that by late middle age, everyones teeth are more brittle and prone to breakage, even if they took good care.i could be wrong, but im willing to bet anyone complaining of a broken tooth may be undergoing the aging process-in other words, not the dentists fault.
I had a root canal done on my front top tooth, and the numbing is what hurt. Once numb, i didnt feel anything. Also, be careful. My root canal filling fell out (i guess because biting down on food) and i didnt know that it fell out because i felt no pain( root canal i think kills the nerves so its no longer painful) but unfortunatly since i didnt feel the pain of the filling falling out.my tooth slowly started turning black. It is now dark brown and ihave to get veneers ($$$$$$$$$)
You won't feel anything, they'll have something to numb your gums. A root canal actually kills the nerve there on your tooth, so it's a good thing. I've had two now and the worst part is the smell of the drill chipping away at the tooth enamel. Otherwise, not as bad as you would think!
Shazz,

My need for a root canal was caught during a 6 month exam. I didn't feel any symptoms leading up to it.

The only pain I felt was the day after, when I forgot to take my painkillers during the night.

Don't eat any corn (don't ask why, just don't do it).
