You need to declare your major - Medicine - and plan on taking pre-med courses. Talk to a counselor. Do well. Shoot for a Bachelor degree in Biology. Apply to take the MCATs (Medical College Aptitude Test). Do well on that and you pretty much have your pick of Med schools as long as you can afford the tuition or win scholarships and grants and get those student loans. Duke, Yale and Harvard are good but so are UC Irvine and UC Berkeley both about. Just get into the best school your money can buy and network with other students. You'll never learn everything but if you and 5 or 6 other folks learn different subjects, you teach eachother. If you're not committed, forget it. Sacrifice and suffer for 4 years and get your medical degree. You ought to know by now what area of medicine you want to go into. Now you are a doctor but you're not licensed and you still need to snag a decent residency in your chosen area. You will most likely have to relocate to some other part of the country. Family Medicine is 3 years. Surgical residencies can go as long as 5+. Suffer some more doing on call for 24+ hours as you sleep and live at the hospital. By the way, you're almost 30 years old. Often there are no weekends or holidays off for you. During this time you will study and review for Boards. Pay your big, fat, application fee, take Boards and sweat for the results. But, dammit, if you pass you're a licensed physician. You can go on to become Board Certified in your specialty, you can do a Fellowship, you can join the AMA.
A doc friend of mine is on the review committee for med school applicants at one of the universities and if you want to know how to impress the committee at your interview, I can tell you how its done because he told me. He also told me what not to do. Drop me a line if you like at nurselmh@sbcglobal.net
Sacrifices...you have to study when everyone else is partying. You can party and have fun....just use moderation.
good luck
If you sincerely want to help people, you should go into natural medicine. If you are getting into it for the money and don't care how many people you poison to get it, conventional medicine is the choice for you.
Shadow, Shadow, Shadow. its the best way to find out what you really want to do.. i followed many different types of docs, from family practice, to radiology, to optometry before i found the one that best suited me. and its sooo easy.. call a local practice in one of the fields you may be interested in and tell them ur a student who is interested and would they mind if you followed them around for a day or two.. take notes and have questions you want to ask ahead of time.. how much hands on work with patients?? how much money?? how much malpractice?? how much time with family ? family was huge in my decision to go optometry over family practice.. so to find out what you want, go view them all and ask questions ..most docs are more then willing to let you shadow ..
